Lattafa's own pyramid runs raspberry and saffron, then leather and patchouli, then oud, amber, benzoin, guaiac and vetiver: the reference skeleton, minus the smoke. It is sweeter and rounder than what it chases, and it says so on the page it comes from. An enthusiast will recognize exactly what it is and want to try it.

The Woods Collection Royal Night - the splurge

It is the only affordable fragrance we could verify whose published note list contains actual smoke - birch and incense - alongside oud, leather, rose and raspberry, which is why it shares more individual notes with the famous raspberry-oud original than anything else we could buy. It is a properly dark evening fragrance from a small French house rather than one of the big Arabian value brands, which makes it both more interesting to an enthusiast and more likely to be new to him.
The honest notes: it is roughly double the price of the Lattafa picks; stock and price move around because the house is small; and the fruit sits in the base rather than the top, so it does not open the way the original does. Khadlaj Island Vanilla Dunes - the new-house extrait
A 2025 extrait-strength release from a house most enthusiasts have not tried, chasing the vanilla-praline-cinnamon-orange-blossom accord of a very recent and very popular niche bottle. It carries the two notes the cheaper picks in its lane drop - the orange-blossom lift and the guaiac wood underneath - which makes it the closest of them to the shape the original brand itself describes. Genuinely unisex, and a conversation piece precisely because it is obscure.
The honest notes: the thinnest owner record of anything here, and it is widely mis-filed online against the wrong reference, so his research will be muddy. Give it to: a man who likes gourmands and likes being first. Not for: the value-minded. The page it comes from.
Afnan Historic Sahara - the sensible extrait
Same accord as Vanilla Dunes - cardamom, cinnamon and bergamot into vanilla, elemi and praline - at extrait strength, for less money, from a house he already trusts. It misses the orange-blossom lift, and it is sweeter than the reference because of an added sugar note; what it has is the complete spiced-vanilla-praline spine and a maker with a record. If Vanilla Dunes is the adventurous pick in this lane, Sahara is the one he is more likely to actually wear through a winter.

Lattafa Maahir - the one he overlooked
A 2020 release that predates the current dupe boom and is not chasing anything, which is part of why it holds up: saffron and rose on top, akigalawood, leather and dry amber in the heart, an oud accord with vanilla and musk underneath. It is the saffron-rose-leather-oud spine of the expensive stuff, done grown-up and smooth, and it is one of Lattafa's more refined bottles. Enthusiasts routinely skip it for louder things, which makes it a good gift: cheap, widely stocked, and easy to have missed.
