Questions
Frequently asked
What is oud, exactly?
Oud (also spelled oudh, and sometimes called agarwood) is a dark, resinous wood that forms when a specific tree is infected by a mold. Real oud is rare and expensive, so most affordable "oud" fragrances use synthetics that capture the smoky, leathery impression for far less. Full explainer: what is oud.
Is 'cologne' the same as 'perfume'?
Not quite. Technically, "cologne" (Eau de Cologne) is a specific low concentration of fragrance oil (about 2 to 4 percent). But in everyday American use, "cologne" just means men's fragrance in general — most products called cologne are actually Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum. We break it down in cologne vs perfume.
What's the difference between EDT and EDP?
Concentration. Eau de Parfum (EDP) has more fragrance oil than Eau de Toilette (EDT), so it generally lasts longer and projects more — but it is often a different composition, not just a stronger one. See our fragrance concentrations guide.
Are cologne dupes and clones worth it?
Often, yes. Many affordable "smells like" fragrances get genuinely close to expensive originals, especially in the first hour. They are rarely identical — clones drift because of cost and ingredient restrictions — but the value can be outstanding. See our dupe comparisons.
Which Arabian houses make the best affordable fragrances?
Lattafa, Armaf, Al Haramain, Rasasi and Afnan are the standouts. They have spent the last decade making rich, long-lasting oud, amber and dupe fragrances for a fraction of designer prices — and, unlike anonymous marketplace sellers, they have reputations and real quality control.
How many sprays of cologne should I use?
For most EDTs, 3 to 4 sprays; for a stronger EDP, 2 to 3 is plenty; for a heavy oud or amber, less again. Start conservative — you go nose-blind to your own scent quickly. Our application guide walks through it.
How do I make my cologne last longer?
Moisturize unscented before you spray, apply to warm pulse points, and choose a higher concentration. Ambers and gourmands naturally last longer than fresh scents. Full detail in make cologne last longer.
What does 'sillage' mean?
Sillage (say 'see-YAHJ', French for 'wake') is the scent trail you leave behind as you move through a space. It's different from projection, which is how far your scent radiates while you're standing still.
What's the best fragrance for a beginner?
Something versatile and widely liked that is hard to get wrong. We rank the best starting points in best colognes for beginners, and the smoothest first oud in best oud for beginners.
Does more expensive cologne smell better?
Not reliably. Price reflects branding, marketing and ingredient cost, but plenty of affordable fragrances outperform designer bottles that cost five times as much — which is the whole premise of this site. Concentration is volume; quality is craft, and the two don't always move together.
Does cologne expire?
Yes, eventually. Most fragrances last 3 to 5 years unopened, and a few years after opening. Heat, light and air speed up the decline. Store bottles somewhere cool and dark — not on a sunny windowsill or in a steamy bathroom.
What scent should I wear in summer vs winter?
Broadly: fresh, citrus and aquatic scents shine in heat; warm oud, amber and gourmand scents suit the cold. Heat amplifies a fragrance, so a heavy winter scent can become overpowering in summer. Start with best summer colognes or the oud & amber hub for cold weather.
Do you actually smell every fragrance you write about?
No, and we say so plainly. Some scents our editor knows first-hand; the rest are assessed from published notes plus aggregated owner and community reports. We never blur the two, and we do not claim a testing lab we do not have. Read our methodology.
How do your prices stay accurate?
They're pulled live from Amazon's product API and stamped with the date they were checked. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears rather than going stale — and Amazon's checkout price is always the one that counts.
