The one edition of Al Haramain's famous Amber Oud line that you can wear to work. Where its siblings are sweet and syrupy, Carbon is a fresh, faintly spicy woody-amber - cleaner, drier, considerably more sober - that keeps the house's long wear without the sugar. It reads expensive without reading young, it works year-round, and the black-and-gold bottle looks like a serious present.

The fresh-fruity, smoky-woody shape that made Creed Aventus famous, done softer, sweeter and rounder than the loud clone everyone talks about. It is less a projection monster and more a polished daily wear with a civilized curve, and it lasts. For a father who likes a fresh scent with some depth to it, this is the bottle - it stands on its own rather than shouting about what it echoes.
Give it to: a dad who wears fresh scents but finds the blue designers thin. Not for: a man who wants the loudest Aventus-style opening - that is a different, younger bottle. Full review.
Armaf Tres Nuit - the classic green one
Its published pyramid - iris, lemon verbena, violet, ambergris, sandalwood - follows a famous green-fresh Creed almost note for note, and that Creed is one of the most-loved "gentleman's" fragrances of the last forty years. Tres Nuit is brighter and simpler than what it echoes, but it is clean, office-safe, and the kind of thing a man sprays without thinking and never regrets. It is also the least expensive bottle on this page by a margin, which makes it the right pick for a stocking or a smaller budget.
Give it to: a father with classic, understated taste. Not for: anyone expecting the refinement of the original, or a scent with real personality. Full review.
Al Haramain Amber Oud Tobacco Edition - the warm one
For the dad who likes rich, warm, cold-weather scents: sweet pipe tobacco, cinnamon and vanilla over the house amber. It reads mature and expensive - "tobacco shop" rather than "candy" - and it is very easy to wear once the weather turns. This is the bottle for a father who already owns a warm fragrance and wears it happily.
Give it to: a warm-scent dad in a cold climate. Not for: summer, a small office, or a man who has never worn anything sweet. Full review.
Lattafa Ana Abiyedh Rouge - the freshly-showered one
A clean, soapy citrus-floral that owners compare to the classic "freshie" designers of the nineties. Understated and mature - it exists to make him smell put-together, not to fill a room - and it is one of the cheapest bottles in our catalog. If your father's idea of cologne is "a splash of something clean", this is his fragrance and it costs almost nothing.

A word on the box
Al Haramain in particular packages its bottles in substantial, heavy presentation boxes that unwrap well, which matters more for a father's gift than for a twenty-year-old's. None of these needs re-boxing. If you want to add something, a card that names the notes and says "this is a work-and-dinner one" does more than any wrapping.
